THE IMPACT OF PRINCIPALS’ INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP PRACTICES AS CORRELATES TO TEACHERS’ JOB COMMITMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU STATE

Abstract

This study investigated determine teachers’ perception of principals’ instructional leadership practices as correlates of their job commitment in secondary schools in Enugu State. Three research questions guided the study while three null hypotheses were formulated and tested. A correlational research design was adopted for the study. This study was carried out in Enugu State. The population of the study consisted of all the 8,805 teachers in the 285 public secondary schools in Enugu State. The sample size for this study comprised 750 teachers in the public secondary schools using proportionate stratified sampling technique. A validated self-structured questionnaire titled “Questionnaire on Principals’ Instructional Leadership Practices” (QPILP) and “Questionnaire on Teachers’ job commitment” (QTC) was developed by the researcher. Cronbach Alpha Method was used to check the internal consistency of the instruments and an overall reliability index of 0.80 was obtained. In answering the research questions, Pearson Product Moment was used while t-Test of correlational analysis was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. It was found out that there is a positive relationship between instructional supervision practices, time management practices, curriculum and instruction practices and teachers’ job commitment in secondary schools in Enugu State. It was also found that there is a joint strong positive and significant relationship among principals’ leadership practices and teachers’ job commitment in secondary schools in Enugu State.
