ABSTRACT

This research project aims to assess the word processing and spreadsheet competencies possessed by Office Technology and Management (OTM) graduate workers in North-Central Nigeria Polytechnics. Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications is essential for effective office management and administrative tasks. This study seeks to evaluate the level of competence in word processing and spreadsheet skills among OTM graduate workers, identify the challenges they face in acquiring and applying these competencies, and propose recommendations for improving the proficiency of OTM graduates in these areas.

A quantitative research design will be employed, utilizing surveys and skills assessments to collect data from OTM graduate workers in North-Central Nigeria Polytechnics. The research objectives include assessing the level of word processing and spreadsheet competencies among OTM graduate workers, exploring the challenges they encounter in acquiring and utilizing these skills, and suggesting strategies for enhancing the proficiency of OTM graduates in word processing and spreadsheet applications.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the word processing and spreadsheet competencies possessed by OTM graduate workers in the context of North-Central Nigeria Polytechnics. The research will assess the level of competence in word processing tasks, including formatting, document creation, editing, and document management. It will also evaluate spreadsheet competencies, such as data entry, formula usage, data analysis, and visualization. Additionally, the study will identify the challenges faced by OTM graduate workers in acquiring and applying these competencies, which may include limited access to training resources, outdated software versions, inadequate training opportunities, and lack of practical application in real work scenarios. Based on the findings, the research will provide recommendations for improving the proficiency of OTM graduates in word processing and spreadsheet applications, such as enhancing curriculum content, providing access to updated software and training resources, incorporating practical hands-on activities, and establishing partnerships with industry stakeholders for skills development.

The implications of this research extend to OTM graduate workers, educational institutions offering OTM programs, employers, and policymakers in North-Central Nigeria. The findings will provide OTM graduate workers with insights into their current level of word processing and spreadsheet competencies, highlighting areas for improvement. Educational institutions can utilize the research recommendations to enhance their curriculum design, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the necessary skills to meet industry demands. Employers can benefit from the research findings by understanding the proficiency levels of OTM graduates and tailoring their training programs and job requirements accordingly. Policymakers can use the research findings to inform policies and initiatives aimed at improving the technical competencies of OTM graduates, fostering employability and economic growth
