THE EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS NEEDED BY SECRETARIES OF SMALL SCALE ENTERPRISES FOR JOB PERFORMANCE IN OGUN STATE

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the employability skills needed by secretaries of small-scale enterprises for job performance in Ogun State, Nigeria. Secretaries play a crucial role in supporting the smooth operation of small-scale enterprises by managing administrative tasks, coordinating communication, and providing organizational support. However, the evolving business landscape demands a broader set of skills beyond traditional secretarial competencies. This study seeks to identify the employability skills essential for secretaries in small-scale enterprises, assess their level of possession and proficiency, explore their impact on job performance, and propose recommendations for enhancing the development and application of these skills.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and job performance assessments to collect data from secretaries, employers, and relevant stakeholders in small-scale enterprises in Ogun State. The research objectives include identifying the employability skills needed by secretaries, evaluating their possession and proficiency levels, examining the impact of these skills on job performance, and proposing recommendations for skill development and application.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the employability skills needed by secretaries of small-scale enterprises for job performance in Ogun State. The research will identify a range of employability skills, including communication, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, organization, time management, digital literacy, and adaptability. It will assess the possession and proficiency levels of these skills among secretaries, highlighting areas of strength and areas that require improvement. Additionally, the study will examine the impact of these skills on job performance, including their influence on productivity, efficiency, teamwork, and overall organizational effectiveness. Furthermore, the research will propose recommendations for enhancing the development and application of these skills, such as targeted training programs, mentorship, and the integration of relevant skills into secretarial education and professional development initiatives.

The implications of this research extend to secretaries, employers, policymakers, and educators. The findings will provide secretaries with insights into the employability skills needed for job performance, enabling them to identify areas for skill development and enhance their career prospects. Employers can utilize the research findings to inform their recruitment and talent management strategies, recognizing the importance of specific employability skills in the performance of secretarial roles.
