ANALYZING THE EFFECTS OF MUSIC TEMPO ON PERFORMANCE AND PERCEIVED EFFORT IN CYCLISTS

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the effects of music tempo on performance and perceived effort in cyclists. Music has been widely acknowledged for its potential to enhance exercise performance and motivate individuals during physical activities. However, the specific influence of music tempo on cycling performance and the perceived effort of cyclists remains to be fully understood.

The study will employ a randomized controlled crossover design, involving a sample of experienced cyclists. Participants will be exposed to different music tempos during their cycling sessions, including slow (e.g., 60-80 beats per minute), moderate (e.g., 80-120 beats per minute), and fast (e.g., 120-160 beats per minute) tempos. Each participant will complete cycling trials under each tempo condition, with a rest period provided between trials to minimize carry-over effects.

Performance measures will include cycling speed, power output, and endurance capacity. Subjective ratings of perceived effort, such as perceived exertion and affective valence, will also be assessed using standardized scales. The study will control for confounding factors, including participants’ fitness levels, familiarity with the music, and personal music preferences.

Data analysis will involve comparing performance outcomes and perceived effort ratings across different music tempo conditions. Statistical techniques such as repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be employed to determine significant differences between conditions. Additionally, exploratory analyses may be conducted to assess potential interactions between tempo and individual characteristics.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of literature on the effects of music on exercise performance and provide insights into the role of music tempo in cycling. Understanding the relationship between music tempo and performance outcomes can inform the development of evidence-based interventions to optimize training regimens and enhance athletes’ motivation and enjoyment during cycling activities. Such knowledge may have practical implications for coaches, trainers, and cyclists seeking to improve performance and adherence to exercise programs.
