THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT COACHING FEEDBACK STRATEGIES ON ATHLETES’ SKILL ACQUISITION.

Abstract:
Effective coaching feedback strategies play a crucial role in facilitating skill acquisition and performance enhancement among athletes. This study aims to investigate the effects of different coaching feedback strategies on athletes’ skill acquisition. The research examines the impact of various coaching feedback approaches, including positive reinforcement, instructional guidance, and error-focused feedback, on athletes’ learning outcomes, skill development, and performance.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to explore existing theories, models, and empirical studies related to coaching feedback and skill acquisition. The review revealed that feedback is a powerful tool for shaping athletes’ behaviors, improving their technique, and fostering skill acquisition. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of coaching feedback is contingent upon the nature and timing of the feedback provided.

To investigate the effects of different coaching feedback strategies, a randomized controlled trial was conducted with a sample of athletes from various sports. The participants were divided into groups, each receiving a different coaching feedback strategy. The positive reinforcement group received feedback focusing on acknowledging and reinforcing correct execution of skills. The instructional guidance group received feedback emphasizing technical instructions and cues. The error-focused feedback group received feedback highlighting errors and providing corrective guidance.

The study measured athletes’ skill acquisition through objective performance assessments, subjective self-assessment questionnaires, and observational evaluations. Additionally, qualitative data, including athletes’ perceptions and experiences with different feedback strategies, were collected through interviews and focus groups.

Preliminary results indicate that all three coaching feedback strategies had a positive impact on athletes’ skill acquisition. However, variations in the effectiveness of each strategy were observed across different sports and skill levels. The positive reinforcement strategy was found to enhance motivation, confidence, and enjoyment among athletes. The instructional guidance strategy facilitated technical understanding and improved execution of skills. The error-focused feedback strategy was effective in identifying and correcting errors, leading to skill refinement.

These findings highlight the importance of tailoring coaching feedback strategies to individual athletes, considering their skill level, sport-specific demands, and personal characteristics. Coaches should adopt a balanced approach, combining positive reinforcement, instructional guidance, and error-focused feedback to optimize skill acquisition and performance improvement.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the effects of different coaching feedback strategies on athletes’ skill acquisition. The findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on coaching effectiveness and offer practical implications for coaches, athletes, and sport practitioners. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of various feedback strategies and their applicability to different sports and skill domains.
