USING ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER IN INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS: A NIGERIAN PERSPECTIVE.

ABSTRACT

This research investigates the utilization of assistive technology as a pivotal tool to bolster the educational experience of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within inclusive classrooms in Nigeria. With the global prevalence of ASD diagnoses on the rise, addressing the unique needs of these learners has become imperative in promoting inclusive education. However, Nigeria’s educational landscape poses distinct challenges, including limited resources and varying degrees of technological accessibility. Employing a multi-method approach, this study combines surveys, interviews, and classroom observations to gather comprehensive data from diverse educational settings across Nigeria. It seeks to illuminate the experiences of students with ASD, their parents, teachers, and school administrators, focusing on the efficacy of assistive technology in facilitating academic, social, and communicative development. The findings underscore the transformative potential of assistive technology in enhancing the educational journey of students with ASD. Positive outcomes encompass heightened engagement, increased independence, and notable advancements in communication skills. Key success factors include the availability of appropriate assistive tools, targeted training for educators, and a conducive school environment that supports technological integration.
