The Use of Mobile Applications for Antenatal, Delivery, and Postnatal Care: The Case of Lagos State

ABSTRACT

This thesis delves into the utilization of mobile applications for antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care provided to mothers residing in remote areas of the Lagos State. The central focus revolves around leveraging information technology to customize the application, offering access to crucial health services related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. The primary objective of this study is to harness Health applications as a solution to reduce mortality within both the community and healthcare facilities. To achieve this goal, the research involved engaging care providers and clients in interviews focused on Health applications. These interviews sought to gather insights and recommendations for enhancing the application’s functionality. The research adopted an agile process model, encompassing proposal, development, and the integration of a prototype with new features. Throughout the study, a diverse range of software tools was employed, including various platforms, programming languages, database servers, and Android Virtual Device (AVD) tools. The findings of this research demonstrate that expectant women can access maternal and child healthcare information conveniently through their mobile phones. Additionally, Health Extension Workers (HEWs), Health Development Armies (HDAs), and other relevant entities, such as ambulance service management, can be promptly informed in case of complications arising during childbirth. The informants consistently conveyed the utility of the application, emphasizing its role in improving their respective responsibilities and facilitating service provision in a broader sense. In conclusion, the researcher provides valuable insights and recommendations for the application’s implementation, including expanding accessibility, ensuring platform independence, enriching the database with a variety of messages, and integrating the mobile application with cloud technology.
