The Detection and Prevention of ARP Spoofing Attacks on Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

ABSTRACT

This thesis specifically focuses on ARP spoofing attacks and proposes an algorithm that leverages the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol to detect and prevent such attacks in MANETs. The primary goal is to mitigate the damage caused by malicious nodes that gain unauthorized access to the network with falsified identities. The proposed algorithm introduces a barrier in the form of lease files to limit unnecessary updates to the ARP table of each node. When a malicious node attempts to join the network, nearby nodes detect it as an attacker and blacklist it, effectively securing every ARP cache entry. The simulation of the algorithm was conducted using the OPNET network simulator. The findings of this research offer a viable approach to safeguarding MANETs from spoofing attacks. Furthermore, the algorithm’s potential for expansion allows researchers to explore its application across multiple MANETs in a single scenario, thus providing significant value to the field of network security.
