PRESS COVERAGE OF THE DEFECTION OF THE FIVE PDP GOVERNORS TO APC; A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DAILY TRUST AND LEADERSHIP NEWSPAPERS (FEBRUARY, 2013–MARCH, 2014)
ABSTRACT
The study conducted a content analysis of the two newspapers, Daily Trust and Leadership, from February 2013 to March 2014, which covered the defection of five PDP governors to the APC. The research subsequently explored whether Daily Trust newspaper covered the defection issue more extensively than Leadership newspaper, or vice versa; the priority given to the defection issues also influences the angle in which the problems are covered. The data collection tool utilized was a self-coding sheet. According to the survey, Daily Trust covered the five PDP governors’ switch to the APC more extensively than Leadership newspaper. Since most of the press releases supported the five PDP governors defecting to the APC, both Daily Trust and Leadership newspapers portrayed the defection issue in a favorable light. Additionally, Daily Trust gave the defection topic more attention than Leadership newspaper. In order to avoid being perceived by the public as siding with one political party over another, the study advises that Nigerian publications work to be fair and impartial when reporting on issues, especially delicate ones like politics.
