THE EFFECT OF MENTORING APPROACH ON SKILL ACQUISITION AMONG BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN KOGI STATE

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the effect of a mentoring approach on skill acquisition among Business Education students in tertiary institutions in Kogi State. Mentoring programs have been recognized as effective mechanisms for enhancing skill development and preparing students for the challenges of the business world. This study seeks to explore the impact of a mentoring approach on the acquisition of skills among Business Education students, including both technical and non-technical skills, in the context of Kogi State.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys and interviews to collect data from Business Education students in tertiary institutions in Kogi State. The research objectives include assessing the effectiveness of the mentoring approach in developing skills, exploring the specific skills that students acquire through mentoring, examining the perceived benefits and challenges of the mentoring experience, and investigating the factors influencing the success of the mentoring relationship.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the effect of a mentoring approach on skill acquisition among Business Education students in Kogi State. The research will assess the effectiveness of mentoring in developing both technical skills, such as financial management, marketing, and entrepreneurship, and non-technical skills, such as communication, leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. It will also explore the perceived benefits of the mentoring experience, including enhanced self-confidence, expanded professional networks, and increased career readiness. Additionally, the study will investigate the challenges faced in the mentoring process and identify factors that contribute to the success of the mentoring relationship, such as mentor-mentee compatibility, trust, and effective communication.

The implications of this research extend to Business Education students, academic institutions, mentoring program organizers, and policymakers in Kogi State. The findings will provide students with insights into the value and benefits of participating in mentoring programs, encouraging their active engagement in such initiatives. Academic institutions can utilize the research findings to design and implement effective mentoring programs that align with the skill requirements of the business education curriculum. Mentoring program organizers can leverage the research findings to optimize the structure and delivery of their programs, ensuring they effectively promote skill acquisition among students. Policymakers can use the research findings to develop policies and initiatives that support and promote mentoring programs as an integral part of the educational experience
