CAPACITY BUILDING NEEDS OF BUSINESS EDUCATION LECTURERS FOR PROFESSIONALISM IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the capacity building needs of business education lecturers in public universities in South-South Nigeria to enhance professionalism in their teaching practices. Professionalism among educators is vital for ensuring quality education and preparing students for the demands of the professional world. However, there is a need to identify the specific capacity building needs of business education lecturers to enhance their professionalism. This study seeks to identify the capacity building needs of business education lecturers, assess their current level of professionalism, explore the challenges they face in maintaining professionalism, and propose recommendations for enhancing capacity building efforts to promote professionalism in business education.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and document analysis to collect data from business education lecturers in public universities in South-South Nigeria. The research objectives include identifying the capacity building needs of business education lecturers for professionalism, assessing their current level of professionalism, exploring the challenges they face, and proposing recommendations for enhancing capacity building efforts.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the capacity building needs of business education lecturers for professionalism. The research will identify the specific areas where lecturers require capacity building, such as pedagogical skills, curriculum development, assessment methods, technology integration, research skills, and industry engagement. Additionally, the study will assess the current level of professionalism among business education lecturers, examining their adherence to professional ethics, commitment to continuous professional development, and engagement in scholarly activities. Furthermore, the research will explore the challenges faced by lecturers in maintaining professionalism, including heavy workloads, limited resources, inadequate support systems, and changing educational trends. Based on the findings, recommendations will be proposed for enhancing capacity building efforts, including faculty development programs, mentoring initiatives, collaborative learning opportunities, and the establishment of supportive institutional structures.

The implications of this research extend to business education lecturers, university administrators, policymakers, and professional development organizations. The findings will provide lecturers with insights into their capacity building needs, guiding their efforts towards enhancing professionalism in their teaching practices. University administrators can utilize the research findings to inform decision-making regarding faculty development initiatives and resource allocation, ensuring that the identified capacity building needs are addressed. Policymakers can consider the recommendations proposed in the research to inform policies and initiatives that promote professionalism among business education lecturers. Professional development organizations can utilize the findings to design and deliver targeted capacity building programs that address the specific needs of business education lecturers.
