ABSTRACT

This research project aims to examine the competencies of Business Studies teachers in utilizing instructional materials for teaching office skills in secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Business Studies plays a crucial role in equipping students with the necessary skills for the workplace, particularly in the area of office skills. However, the effective utilization of instructional materials is vital for enhancing teaching and learning experiences. This study seeks to assess the competencies of Business Studies teachers in utilizing instructional materials, identify the types of instructional materials used for teaching office skills, explore the challenges faced by teachers in utilizing instructional materials, and propose strategies for improving teachers’ competencies in utilizing instructional materials for teaching office skills.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and classroom observations to collect data from Business Studies teachers in secondary schools in Rivers State. The research objectives include assessing the competencies of Business Studies teachers in utilizing instructional materials, identifying the types of instructional materials used for teaching office skills, exploring the challenges faced by teachers in utilizing instructional materials, and proposing strategies for enhancing teachers’ competencies in utilizing instructional materials.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the competencies of Business Studies teachers in utilizing instructional materials for teaching office skills. The research will assess the level of teachers’ competencies in selecting, adapting, and utilizing instructional materials effectively. Additionally, the study will identify the types of instructional materials commonly used for teaching office skills, including textbooks, multimedia resources, simulation tools, and real-world examples. Furthermore, the research will explore the challenges faced by Business Studies teachers in utilizing instructional materials, such as limited availability of resources, inadequate training, and lack of support from school administration. Based on the findings, recommendations will be proposed for improving teachers’ competencies in utilizing instructional materials, encompassing professional development programs, resource allocation, collaboration among teachers, and support from school administrators.

The implications of this research extend to Business Studies teachers, school administrators, curriculum developers, and policymakers. The findings will provide insights to Business Studies teachers on the importance of utilizing instructional materials effectively for teaching office skills, encouraging them to enhance their competencies and explore innovative teaching approaches. School administrators can utilize the research findings to identify areas for professional development and provide necessary support to teachers in accessing instructional materials. Curriculum developers can consider the implications of the research when revising and developing curriculum guidelines for teaching office skills, ensuring the inclusion of effective instructional materials. Policymakers can utilize the research findings to inform policies and allocate resources for the provision of instructional materials in secondary schools.

In conclusion, this research project examines the competencies of Business Studies teachers in utilizing instructional materials for teaching office skills in secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. By assessing these competencies, identifying types of instructional materials, exploring challenges, and proposing strategies, stakeholders can work towards improving the utilization of instructional materials and enhancing the teaching and learning experiences in Business Studies classrooms
