ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF HIGH-PENETRATION SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS ON POWER QUALITY.

Abstract:

The rapid growth and integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems into electrical power grids have raised concerns about their impact on power quality. This study aims to analyze and assess the effects of high-penetration solar PV systems on power quality parameters.

The research begins by providing an overview of solar PV technology and its increasing deployment worldwide. It then explores the significance of power quality in electrical power systems, emphasizing parameters such as voltage stability, frequency variation, harmonics, and flicker.

To evaluate the impact of high-penetration solar PV systems on power quality, a comprehensive analysis is conducted using simulation models and field measurements. The study considers various scenarios, including different levels of solar PV penetration, grid configurations, and system operating conditions.

Simulation models are employed to investigate the voltage and frequency fluctuations caused by solar PV system integration. The models account for factors such as solar irradiance variations, system size, location, and control strategies. Additionally, field measurements are conducted on existing solar PV installations to validate the simulation results and assess their real-world implications.

The analysis reveals several key findings. Firstly, high-penetration solar PV systems can introduce fluctuations in voltage and frequency due to their intermittent nature, which can impact the stability and reliability of the power grid. Secondly, the presence of solar PV systems can lead to increased harmonic distortion in the grid, potentially affecting the performance of sensitive electronic equipment. Lastly, the study examines the potential for mitigating these impacts through advanced control strategies and grid integration techniques.

Based on the findings, recommendations are provided for system operators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to ensure the successful integration of high-penetration solar PV systems while maintaining acceptable power quality levels. These recommendations include the implementation of advanced monitoring and control systems, grid code regulations, and the adoption of smart grid technologies.

Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of the impact of high-penetration solar PV systems on power quality. It provides valuable insights for the effective planning, design, and operation of solar PV systems, enabling their sustainable integration into the power grid and facilitating the transition towards a cleaner and more reliable energy future.
