EFFECTS OF EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ON ANXIETY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT

Abstract:
This study aims to explore the effects of exercise and physical activity on anxiety levels among secondary school students. Anxiety is a common mental health concern among adolescents, and it can have a significant impact on their overall well-being and academic performance. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether regular exercise and physical activity can serve as an effective intervention for reducing anxiety symptoms in this population.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather relevant studies and academic articles on the topic. The findings suggest that exercise and physical activity have a positive impact on anxiety reduction among secondary school students. Engaging in regular exercise has been shown to release endorphins, increase neurotransmitter production, and improve overall mood and cognitive function. These physiological responses contribute to the reduction of anxiety symptoms and promote a sense of well-being.

Moreover, physical activity provides an opportunity for social interaction and positive peer relationships, which can help alleviate feelings of isolation and improve self-esteem. Participating in team sports or group exercise classes fosters a sense of belonging and support, which can buffer against anxiety symptoms.

Furthermore, exercise and physical activity may serve as healthy coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety. Students who engage in regular physical activity may develop enhanced resilience and better stress management skills, leading to a reduced likelihood of experiencing severe anxiety symptoms.

In conclusion, the findings of this study highlight the significant positive effects of exercise and physical activity on anxiety levels among secondary school students. Implementing regular exercise programs and promoting physical activity within schools could be an effective strategy for supporting students’ mental health and well-being. However, further research is required to determine the optimal type, duration, and frequency of exercise for anxiety reduction in this specific population.
