AN EXAMINATION OF BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS TO HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS; PROMOTION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

Abstract:
Physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the overall health and well-being of individuals, including those with mental illness. However, individuals with mental illness often face unique barriers that hinder their engagement in regular physical activity. Health care providers play a vital role in promoting physical activity among this population. This study aims to examine the barriers and facilitators encountered by health care providers in promoting physical activity for individuals with mental illness.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify key barriers and facilitators to physical activity promotion within this context. The findings revealed several common barriers, including limited awareness and knowledge among health care providers regarding the benefits of physical activity for mental health, lack of time and resources, stigma associated with mental illness, and low motivation levels among individuals with mental illness. Conversely, facilitators identified included evidence-based guidelines, training and education for health care providers, collaboration with mental health professionals, increased availability of resources and facilities, and addressing individual needs and preferences.

The study also highlights the importance of addressing these barriers and utilizing facilitators to enhance physical activity promotion efforts for individuals with mental illness. Strategies such as integrating physical activity assessment and prescription into routine mental health care, implementing interdisciplinary collaborations, providing ongoing professional development and support, and utilizing technology-based interventions are discussed as potential solutions.

By understanding the barriers and facilitators faced by health care providers, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners can develop targeted interventions and strategies to promote physical activity among individuals with mental illness. This, in turn, can lead to improved mental health outcomes, enhanced overall well-being, and reduced health care costs associated with the management of mental illnesses.
