AN EXAMINATION OF AEROBIC EXERCISE AND ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

Abstract:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects both children and adults, leading to impairments in various aspects of daily functioning. Current treatment approaches for ADHD often involve medication and behavioral therapy, but there is a growing interest in exploring alternative interventions, such as aerobic exercise.

This study aims to examine the potential benefits of aerobic exercise as a complementary or alternative treatment for individuals with ADHD. The research will review existing literature and investigate the effects of aerobic exercise on attention, executive function, and behavioral symptoms associated with ADHD.

The study will employ a systematic review methodology to synthesize findings from previously published studies. Various electronic databases will be searched, including PubMed, PsycINFO, and Scopus, using specific search terms related to ADHD and aerobic exercise. Studies will be selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data will be extracted and analyzed to identify patterns and trends.

The anticipated findings of this study will shed light on the effects of aerobic exercise on ADHD symptoms and associated cognitive functions. Potential mechanisms underlying the exercise-ADHD relationship, such as changes in neurochemicals, brain structure, and neural network connectivity, will be explored. Additionally, the study will examine potential moderators, such as exercise intensity, duration, and frequency, to determine optimal exercise parameters for individuals with ADHD.

The results of this study are expected to contribute to the current understanding of aerobic exercise as an adjunctive treatment for ADHD. If positive effects are identified, it could provide a non-pharmacological intervention option that is accessible, cost-effective, and associated with additional health benefits. Moreover, this research may help inform the development of exercise-based interventions tailored to individuals with ADHD, optimizing treatment outcomes and improving overall quality of life.
