Abstract:
Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental requirement for human health and well-being. However, many communities around the world still lack access to clean water sources, leading to the prevalence of waterborne diseases. In order to address this issue, various low-cost and sustainable water filtration systems have been developed. This abstract presents an overview of the design, construction, and evaluation of water filtration systems utilizing charcoal, activated carbon, moringa seeds, and sand as filtering media.

The study begins with the design phase, where the filtration systems are conceptualized based on the properties and filtration capabilities of the chosen materials. Charcoal and activated carbon are selected for their adsorption properties, while moringa seeds are chosen for their coagulation and antimicrobial properties. Sand is included as a support medium for effective filtration.

Following the design phase, the construction of the filtration systems is implemented using locally available materials. The systems are designed to be simple, low-cost, and easily replicable, making them suitable for resource-limited communities. The construction process includes the assembly of the filtration units, preparation of filter media, and integration of the necessary plumbing components.

Once constructed, the filtration systems undergo a rigorous evaluation to assess their performance in purifying water. The evaluation involves testing the systems with a range of water sources contaminated with common pathogens, pollutants, and suspended solids. Parameters such as turbidity, pH, total dissolved solids, and microbial content are measured before and after filtration to determine the systems’ efficacy in producing safe drinking water.

Preliminary results indicate that the charcoal, activated carbon, moringa seed, and sand filtration systems effectively remove impurities and pathogens from water. The systems exhibit promising performance in terms of water clarity, reduction of turbidity, removal of suspended solids, and microbial disinfection.

In conclusion, the design, construction, and evaluation of water filtration systems utilizing charcoal, activated carbon, moringa seeds, and sand demonstrate the potential to provide affordable and sustainable solutions for communities lacking access to clean water sources. Further research and optimization are necessary to enhance the systems’ efficiency, durability, and scalability for widespread implementation.
