PETROPHYSICAL EVALUATION OF FLOW UNITS OF THE AGBADA-AKATA FORMATIONS IN THE NIGER DELTA

Abstract:
The Niger Delta region is a prolific hydrocarbon province with significant oil and gas reserves. The Agbada-Akata formations, which constitute a substantial portion of the sedimentary sequence in the Niger Delta, have been identified as potential reservoirs. However, the complex lithology and heterogeneity of these formations pose challenges for accurate characterization and evaluation of their flow units.

This study focuses on the petrophysical evaluation of flow units within the Agbada-Akata formations in the Niger Delta. The primary objective is to assess the reservoir properties and fluid flow characteristics of these formations to enhance hydrocarbon exploration and production efforts.

To achieve this objective, a comprehensive analysis of well logs, core samples, and production data is conducted. Petrophysical parameters such as porosity, permeability, water saturation, and lithology are evaluated using well log interpretation techniques. The data is then integrated with geological and geophysical information to identify distinct flow units within the formations.

The petrophysical evaluation reveals significant variations in reservoir properties across the Agbada-Akata formations. The lithology ranges from shales and mudstones to sandstones and siltstones, with varying degrees of porosity and permeability. The water saturation levels also exhibit variations, influencing the fluid flow behavior within the formations.

The identified flow units are characterized based on their petrophysical properties and fluid flow potential. This information is crucial for reservoir modeling, well placement, and production optimization strategies. Additionally, the findings provide insights into the depositional environments, diagenetic processes, and reservoir quality controls within the Agbada-Akata formations.

The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of the reservoir potential and heterogeneity of the Agbada-Akata formations in the Niger Delta. The petrophysical evaluation of flow units assists in reducing exploration risks, optimizing drilling and production operations, and maximizing hydrocarbon recovery.
