Molecular Identification of Norovirus in Pediatric Patients with Diarrhea in Lagos State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the molecular identification of Norovirus in pediatric patients exhibiting symptoms of diarrhea in Lagos State, Nigeria. The investigation aimed to ascertain the prevalence and genetic diversity of Norovirus strains circulating among this vulnerable population. Stool samples were collected from children presenting with diarrhea and subjected to molecular analyses targeting specific regions of the Norovirus genome. Genotyping was performed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing techniques. Results revealed a notable presence of Norovirus strains, with distinct genotypes identified, indicating a diverse viral population circulating within the pediatric cohort in Lagos State. These findings underscore the significance of ongoing surveillance efforts and the development of targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of Norovirus-associated gastroenteritis in this region.
