CREATION OF FLOW DURATION CURVES FOR CHOSEN RIVERS IN THE UPPER NIGER RIVER BASIN, NIGERIA

Abstract:

This study addresses the challenge that end users of stream flow data often lack insight into the applied quality control measures during data generation. To enhance confidence in the use of stream flow data, an innovative approach is taken by introducing an independent quality indicator. This indicator is developed through the creation of regional flow duration curves for selected ungauged stations in the upper Niger River Basin, Nigeria. The study involves the collection of monthly stream flow data spanning eleven to fifty-three years from seven gauging stations within sub-river basins of the upper Niger River Basin. The stream flow data from these stations are used to create flow duration curves using logarithmic, power, and exponential regression equations. The regionalization process focuses solely on parameterizing the drainage area for the sake of model simplicity. Results reveal that the exponential regression equation provides the best fit in terms of R-squared values. Despite the simplicity of the regionalized model, satisfactory agreement is achieved during both calibration and validation phases. However, due to data length and potential stream flow variability, objective generalization of results is limited. Consequently, it is recommended to incorporate a variety of catchment characteristics in the development of flow duration curves and overall regional models. This consideration is essential given the impacts of anthropogenic activities and hydro-climatic fluctuations.
