AN EVALUATION OF MARITIME CRIME THREATENS NIGERIA’S PETROLEUM ACTIVITIES OFFSHORE

Abstract:

Nigeria, as a major petroleum-producing nation, heavily relies on its offshore petroleum activities to drive economic growth and development. However, the region has been plagued by escalating maritime crime, posing significant threats to the safety and security of these vital energy operations. This abstract outlines a comprehensive evaluation of the maritime crime landscape in Nigeria and its implications for the nation’s petroleum activities conducted offshore.

This research study seeks to provide an in-depth analysis of the various forms of maritime crime prevalent in Nigerian waters, including piracy, armed robbery at sea, illegal oil bunkering, and vessel hijackings. The study will utilize a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, drawing on both primary and secondary sources to gather relevant data.

Furthermore, the research aims to assess the extent to which maritime crime activities have impacted Nigeria’s petroleum industry. By analyzing historical incidents, economic losses, and operational disruptions, the study intends to highlight the direct and indirect consequences of maritime crime on offshore petroleum exploration, production, and transportation.

The evaluation will also delve into the root causes and contributing factors that facilitate the perpetration of maritime crimes in the region. Socioeconomic challenges, governance issues, and regional instability are among the potential drivers that will be explored to better understand the underlying conditions fueling criminal activities.

In conclusion, this research endeavors to provide valuable insights into the scale and nature of maritime crime threats faced by Nigeria’s petroleum activities offshore. By shedding light on these challenges, the study aims to inform policymakers, stakeholders, and international partners of the urgency of implementing effective measures to counter maritime crime and safeguard the nation’s critical energy infrastructure. It is hoped that this evaluation will contribute to enhancing maritime security, promoting sustainable petroleum operations, and fostering a safer and more prosperous maritime environment in Nigeria.
