PERCEIVED IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ABAKALIKI EDUCATION ZONE OF EBONYI STATE
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching effects on various aspects of society, including the education sector. This study aims to investigate the perceived impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the academic performance of secondary school students in the Abakaliki Education Zone of Ebonyi State. The study seeks to explore the challenges faced by students during the pandemic and how these challenges have influenced their educational outcomes.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. A sample of secondary school students from different schools within the Abakaliki Education Zone will be selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The survey will collect data on students’ perceptions of the impact of the pandemic on their academic performance, including factors such as disrupted learning, access to educational resources, and psychosocial well-being.
In addition, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a subset of students to gain deeper insights into their experiences. The interviews will explore the coping mechanisms employed by students, the support received from schools and families, and the strategies used to mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic on their academic performance.
The data collected will be analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques for the quantitative data, such as descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. The qualitative data will be subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and patterns.
The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the perceived impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the academic performance of secondary school students in the Abakaliki Education Zone. The results will inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and other stakeholders about the challenges faced by students during the pandemic and help in developing targeted interventions to mitigate the negative effects on their education.
