EVALUATION OF CHESS PLAYING AND GENDER EFFECT ON ATTENTION SKILL OF THE ADOLESCENT STUDENTS IN ANAMBRA STATE OF NIGERIA
Abstract:
Chess is widely recognized as a game that enhances cognitive abilities, including attention skills, in individuals of all ages. This study aims to evaluate the impact of chess playing on attention skills among adolescent students in Anambra State, Nigeria, while also exploring the potential gender differences in this regard.
The study employed a quantitative research design, utilizing a sample of adolescent students from various schools in Anambra State. The participants were divided into two groups: a chess-playing group and a non-chess-playing group. Attention skills were assessed using standardized attention tests before and after a six-month chess intervention period.
The findings revealed a significant improvement in attention skills among the chess-playing group compared to the non-chess-playing group. The chess-playing group demonstrated enhanced attentional control, selective attention, and sustained attention, suggesting that regular engagement in chess playing positively influences attention skills in adolescents.
Furthermore, the study examined the potential gender effect on attention skills in both chess-playing and non-chess-playing groups. The results indicated no significant gender differences in attention skills in either group. Both male and female adolescents benefited equally from the positive impact of chess playing on attention skills.
These findings underscore the potential benefits of incorporating chess into the curriculum or extracurricular activities in schools. Chess playing can contribute to the development of attention skills among adolescent students, regardless of their gender. Implementing chess programs in educational settings may provide a valuable tool for promoting cognitive enhancement and academic performance among students in Anambra State, Nigeria, and potentially in other similar contexts.
