Examining the Impact of Ineffective Communication on Construction Project Delivery in Abuja, Nigeria.

Abstract:

Effective communication is crucial for successful construction projects, as poor communication has been identified as one of the principal challenges in the Construction Industry, often leading to project failure. Professionals in the construction field need to transfer relevant information accurately throughout the various stages of a project to develop a buildable design that meets client requirements. This research aimed to assess the impact of ineffective communication on construction project delivery in Abuja and propose strategies for improvement.

To conduct the study, a quantitative research method was employed, utilizing a questionnaire distributed among quantity surveyors, builders, engineers, and architects working with construction firms registered with the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI). A total of 75 questionnaires were administered to 25 registered construction firms, yielding a response rate of 53.33%, considered adequate for the research, although hindered by the pandemic lockdown.

The data collected was analyzed using Mean Item Score (MIS) and Relative Importance Index (RII). The study revealed that professionals found face-to-face/oral conversations (RII = 0.95) and maintenance training (RII = 0.83) to be the most effective communication channels. The main causes of poor communication on construction projects ranged from poor feedback (RII = 0.89) to a lack of training (RII = 0.82).

The impact of poor communication on construction projects’ cost (MIS = 3.80-4.55), time (MIS = 3.83-4.50), and quality (MIS = 3.53-4.25) delivery was found to be significant. Identifying effective strategies for improving communication in construction projects proved successful.

In conclusion, ineffective communication negatively affects project delivery, highlighting the need for effective communication throughout the construction process life cycle. By prioritizing effective communication, construction projects can achieve positive outcomes, enhance contractual relationships, improve payment and award processes, optimize planning and scheduling within budgeted time and cost, boost productivity of construction materials and machinery, and strengthen health and safety communication and records.
