Assessing the Post-Occupancy Evaluation of Federal Polytechnic Bida Staff Quarters in Niger State.
Abstract:
This research presents an evaluation of the staff quarters at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, utilizing Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as the primary tool. The study aimed to identify the facilities available in the staff quarters, assess the performance levels of these quarters, gauge users’ satisfaction with respect to design and functionality, and explore the correlation between building performance and user satisfaction. Data was gathered from both primary and secondary sources. Sixty-two questionnaires were distributed to the residents of the Federal Polytechnic staff quarters, consisting of 4, 3, and 2 housing units, with a total of forty-seven questionnaires returned, representing a response rate of 76%. The data collected through questionnaires and observation schedules was analyzed using descriptive and Pearson r correlation in SPSS software.
Findings from the physical observation and walkthrough survey revealed a significant issue of overgrown weeds and unregulated agricultural activities in the staff quarters due to the lack of landscaping, which can create a conducive environment for reptiles. However, the study also showed that the occupants of the Federal Polytechnic staff quarters expressed a high level of satisfaction through the post occupancy evaluation (POE). This indicates that POE is a valuable methodology for analyzing building performance, particularly in tertiary institutional buildings like the Federal Polytechnic Bida in Niger State.
Based on the results, the study recommends conducting Post Occupancy Evaluation of the facilities in Federal Polytechnics Bida to determine their adequacy and identify areas requiring maintenance and improvement. Additionally, it suggests that the Federal Polytechnic should carry out post occupancy evaluations for all facilities before proceeding with future development projects of similar design or use.
