AN ANALYSIS OF THE COMPETENCY REQUIRES OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS IN TEACHING LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS WITH MULTIMEDIA AID
Abstract
The major goal of this study was to determine the English language teachers’ need for competency enhancement in order to utilize multimedia teaching tools for teaching speaking and listening skills in senior secondary schools in the Enugu education zone. In order to identify the precise skill set for teaching the two language abilities of speaking and listening, a descriptive survey study approach was used. Out of a total of 31 senior secondary schools and 183 English instructors, 100 teachers from 5 schools in each of the 3 LGAs in the research region were chosen using a disproportionate sampling approach. The gap between a set skill level for successful training and the usage of multimedia instructional aids was identified using a researcher-developed tool called the Competency Improvement Questionnaire (CIQ). multi-media teaching tools. In accordance with the study questions, mean ratings were used to organize and evaluate the data and to make conclusions. Findings indicate that using multimedia teaching tools to teach speaking and listening skills is challenging for English language teachers. As a result, the study’s main educational conclusion is that program delivery has to be improved in order to satisfy the expectations of high-quality teaching of the four language skills using multimedia aids in secondary education. The key suggestion is that by including such tasks in curricular activities, curriculum planners and developers should introduce pre-service and in-service teachers to the approaches and skill sets in the use of multimedia aids.
