Chapter 1:

Introduction

1.1 Introduction This chapter provides an overview of the research project titled “Assessing the Integration of Sustainability Practices in Construction Projects: A Case Study of a Green Building Project in Lagos, Nigeria.” It outlines the background, problem statement, research objectives, research questions, significance, and scope of the study.

1.2 Background

The construction industry plays a significant role in global environmental degradation and resource depletion. As a result, there is a growing emphasis on sustainable construction practices to mitigate the negative impact on the environment. Nigeria, particularly Lagos, is experiencing rapid urbanization and construction growth, which presents both opportunities and challenges for sustainable development.

1.3 Problem Statement

Despite the increasing awareness of sustainability in the construction industry, the integration of sustainable practices in construction projects in Lagos, Nigeria, remains limited. The adoption and implementation of green building principles are relatively low, and there is a lack of comprehensive research on the factors influencing the successful integration of sustainability practices in construction projects in the region.

1.4 Research Objectives

The primary objective of this research project is to assess the integration of sustainability practices in construction projects, focusing on a green building project in Lagos, Nigeria. The specific objectives are as follows:

  1. To identify the key sustainability practices and green building principles applicable to construction projects.
  2. To examine the current state of sustainability integration in the selected green building project.
  3. To analyze the barriers and challenges to the successful integration of sustainability practices in construction projects in Lagos, Nigeria.
  4. To evaluate the benefits and opportunities associated with the implementation of sustainability practices in construction projects.
  5. To provide recommendations for improving the integration of sustainability practices in construction projects in Lagos, Nigeria.

1.5 Research Questions

To achieve the research objectives, the following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the key sustainability practices and green building principles applicable to construction projects?
  2. What is the current state of sustainability integration in the selected green building project in Lagos, Nigeria?
  3. What are the barriers and challenges to the successful integration of sustainability practices in construction projects in Lagos, Nigeria?
  4. What are the benefits and opportunities associated with the implementation of sustainability practices in construction projects?
  5. What recommendations can be made to improve the integration of sustainability practices in construction projects in Lagos, Nigeria?

1.6 Significance of the Study

This research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the integration of sustainability practices in construction projects, specifically in the context of Lagos, Nigeria. The findings will assist construction stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers in understanding the barriers, challenges, and opportunities associated with sustainable construction in the region. Moreover, the recommendations derived from the study will inform decision-making processes and promote the adoption of sustainable practices in future construction projects.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on a single green building project in Lagos, Nigeria, as a case study. The research will encompass the assessment of sustainability practices and green building principles implemented in the selected project. The research will also examine the barriers, challenges, benefits, and opportunities related to the integration of sustainability practices in construction projects. However, the study will not delve into the technical aspects of green building design or construction methods.

1.8 Structure of the Thesis

The research project will be organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction, providing an overview of the research. Chapter 2 will review the existing literature related to sustainability practices in construction projects. Chapter 3 will describe the research methodology adopted for the study. Chapter 4 will present the findings and analysis of the research. Finally, Chapter 5 will summarize the research conclusions, provide recommendations, and suggest areas for future research.

In conclusion, this chapter has outlined the background, problem statement, research objectives, research
