CHAPTER ONE

1.1     BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Police brutality has been a longstanding issue in many countries, including Nigeria. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of police brutality, particularly against young people, in various parts of Nigeria. This has led to widespread protests and demands for reforms in the country’s police force. Police brutality has been a long-standing problem in Nigeria, with reports of extrajudicial killings, torture, and other forms of abuse by police officers. This has led to widespread mistrust and fear of the police among the population, particularly young people. The #EndSARS movement, which began in 2020 as a protest against the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigerian Police Force, gained widespread momentum across Nigeria and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for police reform in the country.
