In this project study we an attempt is made to redesign a road at eastern bypass dutse jigawa state, based on the principles of pavement design. On the existing and virgin road, soil investigation like dcpt test was undergoed to check for soil bearing capacity,soil samples were collected for the determination of soil characteristics like consistency limits, sieve analysis, c.b.r. values etc.., based on those reports achieved the results were analysed thoroughly and discussed accordingly. And recommendations was made that is all roads mus bet designed properly with load as the most important factor,followed by soil type and availability of drainage system considering it’s the biggest factor that causes the road to fail.

The asphalt road is exposed to many distresses due to of the high vehicular traffic loads causing stresses on the pavement which leads it causing cracks and in a lot of other defects. These defects cause a lot of problems for road users such as discomfort and safety risks. the road will not be safe. All kinds of pavement need proper maintenance as a result of wear and tear over time. Factors that cause wear and tear include environmental factors such as temperature, climate, and imanmade factors i.e., heavy loads and improper installations of electricity and water lines. If cracks occur on the surface of the road due to one of these factors, it requires maintenance work, which can eventually become expensive especially if it’s not treated on time. Road maintenance is one of the important components of the entire road system. Even if the highways are well designed and constructed, they may require adequate maintenance. Road maintenance is necessary and required to protect the road in its originally constructed condition, protect adjacent resources, ensure user safety, and provide efficient and convenient travel along the route.  unfortunately, maintenance is often neglected or improperly performed resulting in rapid deterioration of the road and eventual failure from both environmental and man-made factors. It follows that it is impossible to build and use a road that requires no maintenance.

1.3 Justification Iof Istudy

This study is to evaluate the flexible pavement condition of Ibrahim Aliyu Road (Eastern Bypass) Dutse, Jigawa State (5.35 km)  to determine and specify the types of failures in pavement of the selected highway. It is very significant to evaluate and highlight the causes of the flexible pavement failures and select the most suitable  treatment and maintenance practice

 

 

1.4 Problem istatement

The item “Pavement failure” is defined in terms of decreasing serviceability caused by the development of surface distresses such as cracks, potholes, and ruts. Our engineer at dantata said that before we commence or go into any project the maintenance department, highway engineers must look into the causes of failures of bituminous pavements in the selected area of the road. they found that failures of bituminous pavements are caused by two main factors; environmental and man-made factors or a combination of reasons.

Flexible pavement is the most common type of top layer used on highways. There are three major failures of pavements; they are rutting, fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking. Nigeria like other countries with tropical climates has dry and rainy seasons. The rainy season in particular has a profound impact on road conditions because water is one of the biggest causes of road failures. moreover, the inability of road authorities to limit or stop overloading by heavy vehicles also can cause the structure of the pavement to become weak which leads to the damage of the road pavement
