EXPLORING FACTORS INHIBITING ATTAINMENT OF EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION SECTOR FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Abstract

The higher education sector is highest level of education in Nigerian educational system which anyone can obtain. It is very crucial for national development in the 21st century in all-round socio-economic, political, cultural and religious development. The higher education sector is responsible for production of manpower in the country. The sector was established with certain goals and achievement of these goals is highly dependent on the attainment of excellence in the teaching and learning. Attainment of excellence in teaching and learning in higher education sector is predetermined on certain forces or factors. Most scholars, researchers and literatures have indicated that some factors are responsible for the promotion of quality and excellence in teaching and learning in the higher education sector. This paper discussed those factors inhibiting attainment of excellence in teaching and learning in higher education sector for national development in the 21st century. Such concepts as excellence in teaching and learning together with explanations on why the need for attainment of excellence in teaching and learning in the Nigerian higher education sector, higher education and national development were described in the paper. Issues pertaining to higher education sector and national development in the 21st century, and the factors responsible for inhibiting the attainment of excellence in teaching and learning in higher education sector for national development in the twenty-first century were further discussed in the paper. Way forward for attainment of excellence in teaching and learning in higher education sector was provided in order to conclude the study.
