ASSESSMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES OF SMALL SCALE ENTERPRISE MANAGERS IN ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

This assessed the level of human resource management practices adopted for enhancement of small scale enterprises.  One research question and one null hypothesis guided the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted. The research was carried out in Anambra State of Nigeria. The population for the study consisted of all small scale enterprise managers in Anambra State. While the sample consisted of 754 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire on level of human resource management practices of small scale enterprise managers was developed for the study.  The instrument was duly validated. In order to determine the reliability of the instrument, 10 copies were administered on 10 small-scale enterprise managers in Delta State. Data collected were subjected to Cronbach alpha measure of internal consistency determination which yielded 0.97.  Copies of the questionnaire were administered to the respondents by the researchers with the help of research assistants who were properly briefed on the administration and collection of the questionnaire.  Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of the mean and standard deviation.   Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to provide the statistical test of the hypothesis.  Results indicated low level of adoption of performance management practices by SSEs in Anambra State.  It was recommended among others that managers of small scale enterprises in Anambra State should avail themselves of various training programmes and workshops on human resource management practices to enhance their knowledge and improve their business performance.
