RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRINCIPALS’ HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND TEACHERS’ JOB SATISFACTION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between principals’ human resource management practices and teachers’ job satisfaction in secondary schools in Anambra state. This study was guided by three research questions and one hypothesis. The area of the study was Ogidi education zone, the population of the study was 40 principals in all the public secondary schools in the area. A stratified simple random sampling technique was used to select twenty-four (24) samples of principals and was determined using Taro Yamane’s formular. The questionnaire instrument titled relationship between principals’ human resource management practices and teachers’ job satisfaction in secondary schools (RPHRMPTJSSS) with 15 items which was used to collect the needed data. The data collected was analyzed with SPSS package through mean statistics and standard deviation for the research questions and the hypotheses test was done with chi-square statistics. Findings shown that principals’ improvement and maintenance of teachers’ welfare services is significantly related with teachers’ job satisfaction inOgidi education zone of Anambra state. The study concluded that payment of teachers’ salaries in senior secondary schools in Anambra State is moderate and promotion of teachers’ in senior secondary schools in Anambra State is also moderate. Therefore, the study recommended that since the extent of principals’ human resource management skills determine teachers’ job satisfaction, the principals in public secondary schools inOgidi education zone of Anambra state should improve in the area of motivation and allowance and pay package to teachers. The principals should pay more attention to improve and maintain teacher’s welfare services since it will induce teachers to put more efforts in classroom.
