FAMILY STRUCTURE AND CLIMATE AS PREDICTORS OF SCHOOL ADJUSTMENTS AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ENUGU STATE .

Abstract

There is high incidence of examination failure in English Language and Mathematics as reported by the West African Examination Council as well as the high incidence of school maladjustment in Enugu state. The link between these twin problems and family structures and climate, necessitated this study. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether” family structure and climate predict school adjustment and academic achievement among secondary school students.

The study adopted correlational survey research design. In pursuance of the objectives of the study, eight (8) research questions were posed and six hypotheses were tested. Stratified random sampling technique was employed to select 1200 respondents from SS2 students in Enugu State.

The students were randomly selected from six schools chosen from the six educational zones in the state. Two instruments were used for data collection. These were: the Family Student School Adjustment Questionnaire (FSSAQ) and the Students’ Academic Achievement Scores (SAAS).
