THE ROLE OF PTA IN ADMINISTRATION OF SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF 10 PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS)

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

The act of on knowledge from one generation to another is the role of the parent. The parent are more effective in imparting discipline and knowledge to pupils at the very grass root level, it is therefore a knowledge fact that all parents have the natural inclination to give their children the good things of life they are capable of providing for them. And in the modern age, the major task is on the provision of quality education and good standard of living, in the light of this, parent have developed a very positive interest in what goes on in schools. This interest of parents in the education of their children in schools that give birth to the organization or formation called Parents teachers association. During the later year of 19th century, the parent/teachers association was first organization by a group of American women. The first meeting called the national congress of mother was actually held in 1877. It was this meeting that stimulated the founding of the national congress of parents and teachers which now goes by the name parent / teachers association (PTA), now included in curricular development policy making and setting standards in schools. Abiola A.O. (1967) since parent teachers association is concerned with pupils welfare and all round development that is why parents are giving a role in the administration of primary school. This means that the parent teachers association is interested in the cooperation of the school system. If the school is to achieve its goals, meet the need of pupils and fulfill the expectation of parent, there should be linkage between the teachers and parents. Parents are experienced people who are conversant with child.

Education is a fundamental right which every child must acquire in any decent society, it is important for the development of individuals and societies. Education which is of greater values and ethics of the society, from one generation to its succeeding generations, in bid to know whether an individual is learned or knowledgeable, the criterion to use in measuring the standard of such individual education, that is to say it will try to bring by the individual local government branch of the association as regard to the development reached so far in primary education in the research. Also the project will provide readers with useful data for further usage in similar research work. At the end, the research will identify problems associated with parent teachers association and provide possible solutions to the problems

1.1 Statement of the problem

Many factors gave rise to the formation of parent/teachers association in schools in Dutse local government Jigawa state, it is likely that there is lack of school facilities and could be due to shortage of manpower which may involve parent teachers association (PTA) negotiation, and again it may be as a result of inadequate provision school materials to pupils. All these problems attracts the intervention of the  Parent Teachers Association (PTA) it is probably weather Parent Teachers Association (PTA) are acting to assist school in matters relating to day to day activities. Thus a formal research on this problem on the influence of PTA in administrative is needed to suggest the solution.

The need to identify the role played by parent/teachers association in the development of education has connection with increasing falling standard of education in the public schools in particular; education and the quality it carries determine the level of a nation development. Various indicators especially the product of the educational system in Dutse showed that the standard was on the decline, the work reviewed confirmed that educational standard have actually fall in Dutse local government

1.4 Scope and limitation of the study

The study will be limited to Dutse local government area of Jigawa state; it is mainly concern with the role of parent/teachers association within the study area. The size of the study is limited to 90 workers

 

 

  • Significance of the study

In this research, efforts are directed to make an academic exercise which will broaden our knowledge on empirical experience on the subject matter. The research will throw more light on the role of parent’s teacher association in the development of education. The influence of parent/ teachers association in the administration of schools is of great importance. Quite very often people attributed the success of most schools administrative of the existence of strong Parent Teachers Association (PTA) organization in schools. This research is therefore significant in the sense that it will throw more light on what the student, teachers, and head teacher and the general public to perceive the influence of Parent Teachers Association (PTA) in school administration.

1.6 Definition of terms

  • EDUCATION – the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, belief and habit
  • PRIMARY EDUCATION – Is the initial stage of education and has its basic aim to create, establish and offer opportunities to all children.

1.7 Historical background of the study area

Dutse was relatively unknown to many people except academics even within the old Kano State. Dutse as one of the oldest urban centres within the Old Kano state, it was in fact second to Birnin Kano itself. It was inhabited by many ethnic groups long before the 15th century, such as the [Fulbe] Genawa, Wangarawa, [Kanuri] , and [Hausa] Digawa. BirninGija which is a few kilometres north of Dutse Gadawur is well known to historians as one of the oldest trading centres outside Birnin Kano. The conquest of the Saifawa by the el-kanemi and taking over the administration at BirninGazargamu further brought about a large number of Fulbe immigrants to Dutse, namely the Jalligawa and Yalligawa clans.

Dutse “a Hausa word denoting “Rock” derive its name from the hilly rocks, which encircled the town of Garu {the headquarters of the Emirate} and its environs which covers about 7382 km2, between latitude 100 25 N 120 07’N and longitude 90 05’ E and 100 25 E. Major trade practice by the people of Dutse is farming, animal husbandry and petty trade. The craft activities include blacksmithing, leather-works, tailoring services, auto repairs, metal works, Carpentry, tanning, dyeing, food processing, masonry, weaving (raffia and cloth), pottery, curving and traditional textile.

The rich cultural heritage of the people is reflected in their mode of dressing, music, dance, craftsmanship, hospitality, food processing and pattern of settlement. Hausa culture and tradition have overshadowed others but the Fulani, Mangawa, Ngizimawa and Badawa still maintain their culture and tradition in their areas of concentration. As practicing Muslims they celebrate Eid-el-fitr ,Edel-kabir (Sallah) and Ed-el-Maulud

It shares boundaries with Takai local government in Kano state by south and Kiyawa local government by east, by north Ringim local government and Gaya local government Kano state by west.

Educationally, Dutse local government is highly developed compared to other local governments in the state. It has a total number of 131 primary school (including nomadic schools) with an enrollment figure of 12,270 girls and 18,509 boys totaling 30779 and a total number of 1231 teachers (males 453 and female 175). There are a total number of 44 junior secondary schools of 5, 509 student (boys 4230 and girls 1277) with 138 teachers (males 104 and female 34).

Islamic/Quranic Education: Dutse being predominantly Muslims, have a very significant number of islamiyya and Quranic schools, education with numerous student enrollments. However, statistics revealed that integrated Quranic/Islamiyya Tsangaya education (IQTE) is as follow 480 teachers = 1136 (822males and 8087 female) respectively.
