NIGERIA’S FOREIGN POLICY

ABSTRACT

This study examined Nigeria’s foreign policy under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Administration (2003-2007). The study provided a detailed background on impact of Obasanjo’s shuttle diplomacy in rebuilding of Nigeria’s image in international politics and analysis domestic policies of president Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration and how it shaped it country’s policy of partnership especially with the western powers and the implication of this partnership on Nigeria economic growth between 2003 – 2007. This work also applied historical research method and also employed a secondary source of data collection in which relevant information were generated and analyzed. The study established that while President Olusegun Obasanjo had his short comings in foreign policy implementation, the nation has achieved significant gains through the regime’s shuttle diplomacy. It is our recommendation that President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration have been able to make a shift from Africa as a center piece of Nigeria’s foreign policy of globally focused policy. He campaign vigorously for poor nation of Africa. This regime had played a vital role in transforming OAU into effective African Union (AU), Nigeria under President Olusegun Obasanjo worked tirelessly for new partnership for Africa’s development (NEPAD). Also emphasized on conflict resolution and settlement of debt from international communities. President Olusegun Obasanjo’s shuttle diplomacy also achieved economic and social welfare to Nigerian citizens by making a Nigerian state a peaceful state for enablement of foreign investment. This regime also gave a suitable solution to security challenges faced by the previous regime.
