AN ANALYSIS OF TRADITIONAL MEDIA CONTENT (A CASE STUDY OF ITU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA)

CHAPTER ONE
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The word ‘Itu” is the name of a town, a local government area as well as a Local Government Headquarter. This area comprises varies ethnic groups with conflicting tradition.  traditional media content

Agriculture is it’s principal occupation. The people of Itu Local Government speak Ibibio language. This is a common characteristic of the people of the different part of Akwa Ibom State. Itu Local Government Area is made up of five clans namely Itam, Oku Iboko, Mbiabo, Ayadehe, Itu which is made up of seventy eight villages.

The people of Itu have nine (9) primary schools and (8) eight secondary schools and two post office located at Itu and Itam structures which cure suggestive of prerequisite for development of mass communication, like all other African societies the people of Itu are not without their own unique system of information dissemination but the system like other traditional institutions is fast becoming absolute and therefore cannot play an effective role as socio-psychological bricks of nation building a role the modern mass media are playing.

The mass media are agent of charge. Apart of from the question of national unity and integration, the government wants a link between itself and the government plans and aspirations. It want to generate mutual understanding between the government and the governed, to enlighten the public on their rights and responsibilities, foster a spirit of co-operation between government and the people, while keeping itself (government) it touch with public opinion. Again, the government is engaged in the task of bringing modernity to the society it wants charges from old fashioned or unproductive forming to modern forming from an liberate society to a literate one, from mass production of children to planned parenthood.

These outfits have their principal responsibilities, the functions of disseminating information about government activities to all the people state as well as conveying people’s opinion to the government. It is thereof necessary to study effectively how the messages conveyed by these mass communication agencies are further disseminated to the rural areas of the state where a majority of the population works and live.

1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Nigeria today is faced with different parables confronting traditional media content. The study therefore set out to unravel how traditional media messages are analyzed. The study therefore is concerned with how messages are disseminated to the rural populace through traditional media and the processes the messages pass through since it is certain that there is distortion in the message and a result of further dissemination. Therefore, it’s main problem is: What is the content of traditional message and disseminated among the people of Itu local government area.  traditional media content

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
i. To find out whether the content of information disseminated in Itu Local Government Area is distorted during transmission by the traditional media.
ii. To find out the content and functions of traditional media.
iii. To analyze this content in relation to the various types of media.
iv. To find out other possible uses of traditional media in Itu local government areas.

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The research questions of the study included the following:
i. Is the content of information dissemination in Itu Local Government Area distorted during transmission by the traditional media.
ii. What are the contents and functions of traditional media in Itu local Government area?
iii. Which of the traditional mass media have contributed most to the task of informing, educating and entertaining the people in the rural areas of Itu local government area.  traditional media content
iv. How effective are the traditional media content in Itu Local Government Area?

1.4 JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
The major factors that motivate this study grows from the way traditional media contents are analysis. It is observed that the content of traditional media are either distorted or not understood by their targeted audience.  traditional media content

It is also believe that this study will also increase human knowledge and as a springboard to further researches in the area. The justification of the studies will also help the researcher to know some of the causes of traditional media contents in Itu Local Government Area and the possible problems one way encounter from it.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Itu Local Government Area with it five clans namely; Itam, Oku Iboku Mbiabo, Ayadhe and Itu, for effectiveness of the study, the researcher intends to confine itself to one clan out of the five clans that makes up Itu Local Government Area. It is believed that the results of findings of the study will apply to other clans that makes up Itu Local Government Area.

1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study has limitations one of the major problems that confronted the researcher was the dearth of record the people rely on their brains for storing information, as a result the researcher could not lay hands on reference materials.  traditional media content

1.7 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
The assumption made in this research work are aimed at findings answers to the subject matter of this study in connection with the purpose of the study the assumptions are as follows:
1 Ho: There is communication system in Itu local Government area for the dissemination of information before the advent of modern mass media of communication.  traditional media content
2. H1: Inspite of government investment in the print and electronic media industries as well as the establishment of the ministry of information, rural dwellers in Itu Local Government Area have not benefited substantly from the services these bodies are expected tor provide to all the people of the state.  traditional media content

1.8 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
Grassroots: Dwellers in the rural areas of a country regarded as representing the true character of the people.
Ward: Administrative unit of a local council.  traditional media content
Information: News data, pictures, fact and message, opinions and comments required in order to understand and react knowledgeably to personal, environmental, national and international conditions as well as to be in position to take appropriate decisions.  traditional media content
